Why visit Sossusvlei
BIG DADDY & DUNE 45
The iconic Big Daddy and Dune 45 attract visitors from all over the world. You can choose to conquer the highest peak, slide down the side, or simply marvel at the majestic cascading dunes in all their glory.
DEADVLEI
Nestled at the base of Big Daddy lies the eerily captivating Deadvlei, also known as the “dead marsh.” Centuries ago, the Tsauchab River flooded, creating temporary pools of water that nurtured the growth of camel thorn trees. However, drought eventually claimed their lives, leaving behind a hauntingly beautiful landscape of blackened trees under the scorching sun. Deadvlei is a must-see and offers exceptional photographic opportunities.
FAIRY CIRCLES
Sossusvlei is home to a natural wonder known as fairy circles. These grass-ringed patches, scattered across the landscape, are evenly distributed and never overlap. The formation of these mysterious circles remains a topic of debate, with theories ranging from dust-bathing ostriches to colonies of ants and termites, or simply plants competing for moisture. The enigmatic nature of fairy circles adds to their allure and fascination.
SESRIEM CANYON
Carved over millions of years by the erosion of the Tsauchab River, Sesreim Canyon is one of the few places in the area that holds water year-round. The canyon derives its name from the early Afrikaans explorers who used six leather straps (“ses riem”) tied together to create a long enough rope to lower buckets into the canyon and fetch water. Visitors can park their vehicles and take a walk through the canyon, exploring its narrow passages and being captivated by the stunning rock formations. The presence of robust barbel fish in the pools adds to the canyon’s allure.
Sossusvlei offers a mesmerizing and otherworldly experience, with its towering dunes, haunting landscapes, and intriguing natural phenomena. It is a destination that will leave you in awe of the wonders of nature.
